Empathising In the second day of project, seven Fuel boys, full of confidence, stepped off along the nearby main street. No translator, no worries. We learnt one key thing that day; to plan more. The rest of the week was full of empathising, getting to know the Cambodian way of life in villages all around Siem Reap and making friends with translators. It became very clear that there were New Lao Stoves everywhere in rural villages and that they were already a cheap and sustainable way to...

Reassert Lean Phase:  Value Proposition Reassert Assumption: Our assumption was that if we were able to offer our value proposition relative to traditional wood charcoal, would they choose our product. Value Proposition: Our briquettes are cheaper than wood charcoal, burn more efficiently, are easy to use and more sustainable. Results: Hit Green Target Our monthly target of 25 households was reached.  All villagers said that they would buy the product if it was cheap and...

Lean Phase: Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partners This experiment will focus on securing a supply chain for the effective delivery of briquette production. Key considerations here are scalability and reliable materials to service potential demand. Assumption: Securing reliable suppliers of biowaste (investigating farmers, tips, businesses) Securing logistics at fixed costs (transport of biowaste and briquettes) Building relationships with villages and charcoal...

Lean Phase: Solution. This experiment will focus on the ideation of briquette prototypes to incorporate the feedback from offer testing conducted in July. Assumption: The assumptions to test are as follows: Hollowing the briquettes with a hole through the middle will decrease drying time and improve airflow through the stove Briquettes can be made in various sizes to accommodate the needs of the customer and can still achieve the same burning efficiency The current...

The fuel team in Cambodia proceeded to create a prototype of a biomass waste charcoal briquette to get an idea of the manufacturing process and for initial testing on effectiveness (heat transfer and burning time). These prototypes would also be used for offer testing (to test if villagers like the idea we're developing). Our prototype briquette was made out of coconut husks found on a trailer driving through town. It was obtained free of charge, the only cost being the bags needed to carry...

On the back of the HUGE strides of Rocket Stoves in Fiji, we are bringing Fuel Sustainability to Cambodia! We have a team of five multi-disciplinary engineering students and two engineering leaders who will be hustling hard throughout this first month. We plan to hit the ground running by standing on the shoulders of the giants in Fiji. The goals for this month are designed to assess and test the potential for a successful Buka Stove model in Cambodia. We plan to execute this with a keen...

Getting your team dynamics right is a vital part of a productive workplace. Not every day is going to go smoothly and you’re going to hit plenty of rough patches. There will be days where everybody is low on energy. Maybe there was a disagreement yesterday and there’s some tension in the group. Raising team morale consistently is the perfect cure.   One of my own personal creations is the Gag List. Born from a long overnight stopover at Darwin Airport, the Gag List is a record of...
