Today was SoCon's first trip to Lautoka. The area manager for SPBD, Vani, booked in two workshops from us today with the SME ladies.  We had 18 ladies attend our first workshop at 1100 and 12 attend the afternoon workshop at 1400. It was a definite success for our first trip and workshop in the area and great to be able to make that ground for the Feb team to continue with. The major successes of the day were: Great audience participation and engagement which was more evenly...

Today we finally made contact with Jay who is the SPBD area manager for Suva and Sigatoka.  We originally wanted to run workshops in Suva and Sigatoka this week but unfortunately he is unavailable. However, we have one workshop time tentatively available for next week in Suva. Jay originally informed us that he could not organise Sigatoka workshops for next week due to booking conflicts at their office but we are trying to offer other options to mitigate the block, such as providing our...

Elrico at SPBD put us in contact with the area managers to arrange workshop times for this week. We contacted Vani who is the area manager for Lautoka and proposed to run 2 workshops on SME 1 this Thursday 25/01/18. He has confirmed that we are booked to run the workshops in Lautoka this Thursday at 1100 and 1400 and that there is likely to be more than 15 participants in each.  Just waiting to get the final confirmation of names and numbers by Wednesday.

On Friday 19/01/18 we had our trial workshop with SPBD as per the new MOU where they refer women who are applying for SME loans through our workshops. They had confirmed with us that 25 women would be coming. We arrived at 10:30 and there was around 20 women in the room waiting for us already! When registering they explained they arrived because they knew it would be $15 before 11AM - it seems our strategy to combat Fiji Time was effective! Overall, we had 36 women attend and made $560...

Today (17/01/018) was our deadline to have the MOU signed by SPBD. This is because we have arranged a workshop trial with them this Friday 19/01/18 in Suva.  We had not heard from them by this morning, so followed up and they sent back some small amendments to the MOU.We then sent them back a new copy and they said they agreed to those terms and were happy to go ahead and sign. Currently, we are waiting on Jimmy to sign and stamp the MOU so SPBD is able to do the same.  However, it's...

On Thursday 11/01/18 a bunch of us headed to Suva for some stakeholder meetings with the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade (MITT), the Australian High Commission, SPBD and the Fiji Council of Social Services Microfinance Unit (FCOSS).  Two people from the Fuel and FarmEd teams also joined us. We started off the morning at MITT where we met with Suraj who is a senior economic planning officer. Suraj talked us through the $1000 grant that the Ministry offers to small business owners...

One of our goals for January is to increase the autonomy and sustainability of the project by moving to a 'teach the teacher' model and pursuing ideas to ensure SoCon can continue working even when there are no trekkers in the country. We want to establish an internship program with the business schools of Fijian universities so and eventually have interns running workshops all year around.  Unfortunately, building relationships with universities is still stagnant at the moment because...
