PROJECT adopted

Problem: In Fiji, the concept of waste management is an interesting one. There is some understanding of its benefits, and there are waste collection services that operate. However, there is a serious lack of options and transparency in its collection. Recycling requires transporting materials to specific locations during specific hours, waste collection services can be unreliable or expensive, recycling bins on the streets of tourist areas are not actually collected or are sent to landfill...

Lean Phase: UVP   Assumption: People in Jumtha are willing to work in our Waste Management System.   Success Metric: We are measuring the rate of conversion by getting agreements from people in Jumtha. We are aiming to trial at least 60 people.   Time Box:  1 - 2 weeks   CRITERIA: Green Light - Proceed:  Move to MVP phase   Success point: 30% of people approached who are actively seeking further income are willing to agree to a contract to partake in this service....

Lean Phase: Empathy and Customer Segment  Assumption: That a range of Fijian residents want to buy our Buka Stoves, and that their needs, wants and pain points, and ultimately the value proposition of the Buka Stove to them, will be different amongst each segment. Time Box: 3 weeks Success Metric: Metric – 200 surveys completed with at least 8 distinct archetypes able to be identified Green Light – 8 clear archetypes emerging with customer segments able to be separated...

Lean Phase: Supply Chain and Key Activities  Assumption: It is possible to independently and reliably create Buka stoves in Fiji from imported materials at a rate high enough to keep up with demand, in an ethical, safe and quality controlled way. Time Box: 2 weeks initially, with a further 1 week allocated for each iteration required  Success Metric: Metric – 50 stoves moving through the supply chain from start to finish with no help from PEV, with performance assessed and...

Adopted Experiment

Lean Phase: Supply Chain and Key Activities  Assumption: 1. That there are multiple customer segments that we can target effectively in different ways, increasing the reach of our product, 2. That is is possible to independently supply stove to stores and manage the ordering, invoicing and payment systems remotely. Time Box:  2 weeks for Kasabias and Vinod Patel, additional 2 weeks for final three channels, additional 2 weeks for setting up autonomous ordering and delivery...

Adopted Experiment

Lean Phase : Customer Segments  Assumption:  That there is a customer segment that matches that of RB Patel, who are willing to buy our stoves in store and pay a higher price for the convenience.  Time Box:  July – December (Ideally) Success Metric: Metric – 15  stoves sold in store.  Green Light – Due to the extended time frame of the experiment, selling 100% of stoves is considered to be a successful validation. The next steps would then be setting up an autonomous ordering...

Project Summary

Fuel in Fiji this July was split into two teams, roughly separated as 1) Supply and Distribution and 2) Prototyping and Sales. Both teams made huge strides forward for the project, with an outline of their achievements this month set out below.   Fuel I  set out goals for the month of July with the main goal in sight of establishing a supply and distribution chain for the production of the rocket stoves within Fiji. We are so excited and proud to announce today that Fuel I has made...

Work Update

This month fuel sustainability splits off into two teams to divide and conquer their goals. Fuel I will be primarily focusing on solidifying the supply chain and distribution channels and completing a country and worldwide competitor analysis. Whilst the current use of refrigerant tanks to design the stove has been fantastic for prototyping purposes, they limit the scale at which the stoves can be produced and aren’t feasible in the long term. This month we aim to find a way to mass...

Work Update

The prototyping team has gone from strength to strength this month, building upon the December team’s efforts in glass and plastic and coming up with a wide range of brand new ideas.   Our most promising prototype is using glass in a concrete aggregate mix. There are multiple studies on its strength and effectiveness, and we currently have our own aggregate bricks undergoing compressive strength testing by an Australian company here in Dili. Results won’t be in for another three...
