[Proposed Experiment]: SoCon Malawi - Microfinance Institutions - Offer Testing - January 2019

Lean Phase: Offer testing

Assumptions: Microfinance institutions lack sufficient means to assess the risk of new customers. Reasons may include:

  1. Potential customers have no formal records of creditworthiness; and

  2. Assessing potential customers creditworthiness is resource intensive for microfinance institutions

Time Period: 1 week (or time is taken to survey 8-10 microfinance institutions)

Success Metrics:

1. % of microfinance institutions who limit the number of new customers they onboard due to inability to rate their creditworthiness

Criteria:

Success Point: if more than 50% of microfinance institutions limit the number of new customers they onboard due to inability to rate their creditworthiness

Green Light: Proceed to Village Bank experiment - Credit Scoring system

Orange Light Point: if 20-50% of microfinance institutions limit the number on new customers they onboard due to inability to rate their creditworthiness

Orange Light: How do those microfinance institutions that can onboard new customers do so?

Failure Point: if less than 20% of  microfinance institutions limit the number on new customers they onboard due to inability to rate their creditworthiness

Red Light: look at other areas in which microfinance institutions are struggling and understanding in which way we can service their needs.

Experiment Build:

1. Create a survey based on the above metrics

2. Identify microfinance institutions to validate assumptions with

3. Organise meetings with microfinance institutions

4. Execute survey

5. Measure results and post experiment results
