Adopted Experiment

[Experiment Adopted] Fiji Fuel Dec 18 - Buka Stove Comparison

Lean Phase: Solutions

Assumption: Buka Stove 5.0 is more efficient (see key metrics for efficiency) than Buka Stove 4.0 and three stone fire

Time Box: 1 week

Key Metrics:

  • Time taken to boil 3 Ls of water
  • Fuel required to boil 3 Ls of water (Fuel Consumption rate)
  • Weight and Strength test

Success Criteria

Green Light Point –

1) 15% more efficient (with respect to time and fuel consumption) than Buka Stove 4.0 and 50% more efficient than an open fire

2) Able to hold the same or more weight than Buka Stove 4.0

Green Light Proceed:  Validate the stoves with the customer and begin production of 5.0

Orange Light Point -

1) 10 - 15% more efficient (with respect to time and fuel consumption) than Buka Stove 4.0 and 30 - 50% more efficient than an open fire

Orange Light optimise:  iterate on the design to improve the efficiency of the stove

Red Light Point –

1) Less than 10% efficiency improvement (with respect to time and fuel consumption) over Buka Stove 4.0 and less than 30% efficiency improvement over an open fire

2) Unable to hold the same weight as Buka Stove 4.0

Red Light Failure: massive iterations and design improvements required to the stove.

Experiment build:

  1. Measure the mass of the wood to ensure that all stoves get the same amount of wood

  2. Light the stove by using coconut Husks or other kindling to start the fire

  3. Ensure a consistent burn by placing the fire at the centre of the stove

  4. Replace wood periodically and note the time

  5. Measure the temperature inside the stove and outside of the stove

  6. Repeat the experiment with constant water but measure the mass of wood used against the time taken to boil the water.
