[Experiment Adopted]: Mobile Money (1/2) - Access

Lean Phase: Channel Testing

Assumption: that consumers have access to mobile money as a payment system. We need to prove that:
1. The level of phone penetration is sufficiently high
2. There is reliable network coverage in communities to enable mobile money transfers
3. There is close proximity to a mobile money dealer to be able to convert cash into mobile money for transfer

Note: these variables are very location-dependent; therefore, it is important to validate this across a strong geographic spread

Time Period: 1 week (or time taken to survey 30+ consumers in a particular geographic region)

Success Metrics: % of people who:
1. Have a phone, or has a phone in the household (basic or smart), and
2. Have reliable network access, and
3. Are in close proximity to a mobile money dealer (within 1hr walking distance)

Criteria:
Success Point: if more than 50% of customers have access to a phone, the area has reliable network access, and close access to a mobile money dealer (all 3 criteria must be met)
Green Light: proceed to second experiment - Knowledge & Usage
Orange Light: can we streamline/aggregate cash collection and have those collectors pay through mobile money.
Failure Point: if less than 50% of customers have access to a phone and reliable network, or if less than 30% are in close proximity to a mobile money dealer
Red Light: can we streamline/aggregate cash collection and have those collectors pay through mobile money?

Experiment Build:
1. Create a survey based on above success metrics/criteria
2. Identify geographic locations to validate assumptions with
3. Organise survey visits
4. Execute survey
5. Measure results and post experiment results

P.S. this experiment can be conducted in conjunction with the Village Bank experiments - for village banks, it will likely be simpler if we investigate whether the village bank has access to mobile money payment systems (rather than each village bank customer). If there is already a payment collection system that works effectively, it will be more efficient for us to collect a single payment per village bank, instead of collecting individual repayments from each customer.
