Adapting an application to work on a brickphone

Stepping off into Malawi, one our biggest concerns moving forward was the smartphone penetration within the community. However following the western trend, more citizens of Malawi are switching from your brick phone to a smartphone. Your. MD, as well as all applications, will only be accessible from a smart phone. Majority of the community would not have access to our product. This left the health team with a big question, how do we make a large scale impact with an application?

One idea that the December team had to have greater access was through the use of HUBS built throughout the community. This would allow access to the application without having a smartphone. There is a previous crowdicity if you wish to read more on the HUB idea.

The January team have really been looking into how we can have a greater penetration on the community. As such we have come up with a triage system that is based through shortcode. For any one that has ever used Airtel or TNM it would follow the same concept as buying a bundle. This would give a much more limited experience of the application, those who used the shortcode version of the product would get some guidance into treatment. As such a traffic light system would be developed.

Green = treatment at home
Orange = Visit a clinic
Red = Need immediate attention at a hospital

Through the development of a triage, this would funnel patients to the correct level of care and free up the hospitals to treatment only the more serious cases.

To further extend this triage system, all patients would receive a follow up message the next day asking if their condition had improved, stayed the same or had gotten worse. This would allow patients to move up and down the triage list if required.

I love this idea, It's very similar to the Chipatala Robot Program that's being used to triage children within african hospitals to ensure the paediatric system is working as efficiently as possible. The use of colours will also help with the language barrier as triage systems are already developed in Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, and many will have an understanding of the urgency then surrounding their specific health condition. Additionally, it may be worth while looking into the Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) if the team has not already, developed by WHO and tailored to the Malawian healthcare system, specifically within a hospital setting. It may help with the future defining of what conditions and treatment options are included and available under the three triage colours. Looking forward to seeing the final progression of the Jan team and your data collection!!

Hi Jayden,

This is awesome! Most lower-socioeconomic Malawians especially in the villages probably would not see the value in switching to a smartphone just for access to the app and they probably wouldn't be able to afford it either. This idea gives access to many more people and reaches even the lower socioeconomic market to ultimately enable them to also spend more time working and less time travelling long distances to the hospital. Hopefully, if they can spend more time on their farms they will be able to have a more productive farm to accelerate the Agriculture Assessment too by allowing them to supply to local businesses. I look forward to seeing the progress the Feb team makes with this idea!
