Project Everest Facilitating Educational partnerships between developing nations and Australia

While the Timor Leste baseline energy assessment team conducted their research into education sector a rather interesting request popped up quite consistently from the education sector, a seemingly simple request but one that could have huge impacts on the growth and education of a country.

The request was from universities in Timor-Leste wanting partnerships with Universities in Australia. They want to get exchange programs running, to send academics and students over to Australian universities so they can benefit from a place with high tech infrastructure, and have their students and staff come back with new eyes having learnt from high quality universities filled with phD lecturers and advanced research topics. They also want to benefit from the high quality, passionate lecturers that could be sent from Australian universities to teach, in person the next generation of Timor-Leste students, to share their in-depth knowledge in the areas of engineering, science and informatics. The Australian lecturers also benefit from teaching a completely different group of students, teaching in a developing country and broadening their horizons allowing them to think in diverse ways. These partnerships could work to greatly strengthen the relationship between Aus and Timor as the next generation of workers will have had close ties with Australia whether by going there on exchange or having Australian teachers.

This is unfortunately not a simple thing to implement despite the simplicity of the idea. There are many barriers that stand in the way. An obvious one is huge knowledge gaps meaning that standard curriculums would not be transferrable between countries.

Another issue is money. Australian Lecturers would need to have the desire to grow from the experience and have that be their main payment. On the other side students and staff of Timor Leste affording such a trip could pose huge difficulties due to how expensive it is to live in Australia. These are issues that don’t necessarily fall on PE however and come down to what university partnerships work out.

A rather surprising issue that may form the largest barrier to an exchange program though is that there have been no dentists in Timor and this poses a legal issue in terms of healthcare. Before an exchange program can be put into effect healthcare in Timor needs to improve.

This could be a huge service that PE provides improving relationships between countries, helping facilitate huge personal growth by creating opportunities for highly trained academics to travel and spread their knowledge to developing nations and through this allowing for a higher trained population clearing the way for higher tech infrastructure. Potentially creating further opportunity for businesses in an accelerated timeline. This could boost Project Everest’s image in the public eye even further while accomplishing something truly amazing.

This could manifest in a proposal written to select Australian universities in conjunction with UNTL. The benefit for PE could be the addition of consulting academics in country (similar to Cris Birzer this month). It would seem highly unfeasible to facilitate a student exchange program as a third party organisation as at the end of the day these things are set up between uni's, however with value added to a universities brand, and to access to academics for PE in country, the idea could be pushed within Aus unis with the help of academics who would actually be on board.

I think it is very important for countries to do everything that can be done for education, as a result, the individuals who grow up make up that country.
