We are the first Plastic for Purpose team in Timor-Leste. Our current stage in the design thinking process is empathising. We have set up a number of interviews with local authorities, businesses and leaders, and have been surveying the local communities about their thoughts and opinions. At this stage, proper understanding of the community in which we are working is our most crucial goal. To ensure that we gain this understanding, we are using our surveys in a more open-ended way, to have a real conversation with the community.

Timor-Leste is a naturally beautiful country, however due to poor waste management, waste has accumulated. This has resulted in a number of social issues such as a declined quality of living. For example, we have discovered that a number of families living in the city centre of Dili are increasingly concerned about their health due to the higher number of mosquitos that are attracted to piles of sitting rubbish.

We hope that by fully empathising with the community, we will be able to develop a sustainable solution catered to the Timorese people.
