[Experiment Results]: Hidden Hunger Malawi - District Nutritionist Survey: Utility Test – December 2019

Lean Phase:

Utility Testing

Assumption:

Nutritionists in each of the 28 districts in Malawi will provide information on the types of food specifically available in their district.

Time Box: December Week 1-2

Purpose: To obtain district-specific information regarding food accessibility in order to ensure USTAWI is a more district tailored application.

Success Metric: Obtain information on each food listed in the app from nutritionists across different districts.

CRITERIA

Green Light: Assumption is confirmed. Nutritionists provided information on the types of foods available in their region.

Success point: 60% of Nutritionists have provided information on the specific foods available in their region.

Orange Light: Between 20% and 60% of nutritionists provided information on the specific food available in their region.

Red Light: The experiment contradicts the assumption and no information was gained from each district nutritionist.

Failure Point: 0% - 20% of nutritionists provided information on their specific food available in their region

Results:

The results of the utility test was an Orange Light

Survey Results:

The following is the complete answers to all our survey questions: Nutritionist Survey Results

The information collected from the nutritionists was extremely specific and highly intuitive. Each of the nutritionists had a very detailed understanding of their districts nutritional needs. In addition to gathering helpful information on each district’s nutritional habits, the survey was able to establish a number of patterns which permeated all of the districts we contacted.

Key information:

Supporting research

Failure

We received survey answers’ from 13 of the 28 districts in Malawi. Our assumptions were proven correct, with each nutritionist having a detailed understanding of their districts nutritional state. Each survey question provided helpful knowledge that Hidden Hunger can draw from in future experiments. However and importantly, we did not receive data from all 25 districts in Malawi. The shortage of data points renders means that further surveying is required.

Actions On

  • Repeat the experiment collecting more data from each district.
  • Attempt to establish district specific and Malawi specific patterns on the nutrition habits in each district. eg In which areas are which nutrients lacking and what foods have these nutrients
