[Proposed Experiment]: Hidden Hunger Malawi - Analysing Accessibility to Food: Utility Testing - July 2019

Lean Phase: Utility Test

 

Purpose: To obtain information about food accessibility for the foods listed in the USTAWI   that is Malawi specific.

 

Assumption: That market vendors in Blantyre Market, Limbe Market, People’s and Nancholi Market will provide information about food accessibility in Malawi. Further information will be acquired in the supermarket. Food accessibility in this case refers to the price of different foods, seasonal availability of different foods and how to acquire them.

 

Time Box: July 2019 Weeks 1-4

 

Success Metric: Obtained information about the accessibility of foods listed under the six food groups in order to ensure that the USTAWI application is Malawian specific.

 

CRITERIA

Green Light: Assumption is confirmed that market vendors will provide information about food accessibility, with data collected for 100% of foods listed in the revised list of Malawi Foods.

Success Point: Data is collected from 70% of foods in the revised list of Malawi Foods.

Orange Light: Between 30% - 70% of data is collected regarding the foods in the revised list of Malawian Foods

Failure Point: 30% or less data was collected from market vendors and supermarket

Red Light: Data was not able to be collected from market vendors and supermarket regarding their produce. Revise experiment.

 

Experiment Build:

1. Acquire the list of foods that already exist in USTAWI application. 

2. Contact and meet with a nutritionist and ask about the accuracy of the foods currently listed in the app. 

3. Write a new list of foods based on information provided by nutritionists regarding the 6 Malawi Food Groups. 

4. Create a “Food Accessibility” survey for both market vendors and supermarket

5 Arrange a time to visit Blantyre Market, Limbe Market, People’s, Nancholi Market and Shoprite.

7. Collect data on as many foods listed in the revised food list using the survey. 

8. Victory.

9. Compile the data in the Hidden Hunger google drive and analyse.

10. Write up experiment result

 

Notes:

  • This experiment is to collect information about the types of food in Malawi in order to ensure that the USTAWI application is applicable in the Malawian context.
  • The “Food Accessibility” survey needs to be conducted in both the dry and wet season to ensure that information of all the foods listed are collected
