Metric Measurement Experiment

{Project Metrics - Collection] Waste Timor-Leste July 2019

Context: Key metrics must be collected for all of our projects to understand any carbon offset opportunities, positive short term impact and longer-term opportunities. These metrics will provide a framework for the Waste Project moving forward and metric results will be updated as new information and larger data sets become available.

Metrics

  • Number of bags collected in the day
  • Average number of bags collected from each store
  • Total volume of recyclables saved from Tibar
  • Average/total time saved by businesses by not having to deliver waste themselves to government bins, landfill or burn.
  • % of collected recyclable that was handed over to repurposing businesses instead of being stored 
  • % of stores that wanted to supply us with more than our limit (3 bags)

 

Time Period: 2 weeks 

Success Metrics:

This trial collection service is a one-off and therefore did not yield ongoing data. Hypothetically, if we were to conduct an ongoing service, the following ideal success metrics can be utilised:

  • Less than 1 bag per store collected per day of service renders our impact as insufficient
  • Less than 30 minutes of time saved by each business in delivering/burning their own waste would be deemed insufficient.
  • If more than 30% of clients we collect from want to deposit over our limit, our service is not scalable enough.
  • If more than 40% of our collection is put into storage instead of repurposing, our repurposing partnerships are insufficient

Experiment Build:

Most of these volume/% metrics can be calculated from our involvement in the collection run. Part of the client post-service survey can include their estimation of time saved for them dealing with their waste. We can also look at previously collated data from previous groups and how this data has changed to this month.
